Mary Tyler Moore was an award winning American actress, producer and television personality. Her acting credits include The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Ordinary People. Moore was born to parents Marjorie and George on December 29, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York. She had two siblings, John and Elizabeth. Moore spent her early childhood in Flushing, Queens before moving to Los Angeles at age 8. She’s a graduate of Immaculate Heart High School.
CAREER
Moore started out in the entertainment industry as a dancer in commercials in the mid 1950s. One of her memorable part was that of a dancing elf called “Happy Hotpoint” for Hotpoint appliances. She also had some success as a chorus dancer in a variety of television programs. Moore played the role of “Sam” in 7 episodes of the drama series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective. She followed up with guest appearances in shows like 77 Sunset Strip, Riverboat, Bachelor Father and Hawaiian Eye.
Moore made her feature film debut in the 1961 aviation film, X-15. The film was directed by Richard D. Donner and stars David McLean and Charles Bronson. Moore rose to prominence with her starring role as “Laura Petrie” on The Dick Van Dyke Show with Dick Van Dyke. She won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her performance. The show ran on CBS from October 1961 to June 1966 for a total of 158 episodes. Moore’s next big role was that of “Mary Richards” on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The sitcom ran for 7 seasons from 1970 to 1977. Other television appearances by Moore include The Naked Truth, Mary, Rhoda, That ’70s Show, Lipstick Jungle and Hot in Cleveland.
Moore appeared alongside Julie Andrews in the movie musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). She starred as “Beth Jarrett” in Robert Redford’s drama film, Ordinary People (1980). The role of Beth earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress. Other notable films include Change of Habit (1969) with Elvis Presley, and Flirting with Disaster (1996) with Ben Stiller. Moore won a Tony Award in 1980 for her role in the Broadway play, Whose Life Is It Anyway? She voiced the character “Granny Rose” in the Italian animated film, How the Toys Saved Christmas (1996).
In addition to acting, Moore was an author and animal rights activist. She wrote two memoirs, After All (1995) and Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes (2009). A statue of Moore tossing her hat in the air was erected in downtown Minneapolis in 2002.

Mary Tyler Moore died on January 25, 2017 at the age of 80. Her reported cause of death was complications from pneumonia. She was placed on a respirator a week prior to her death. Moore had suffered a number of health problems including diabetes. She underwent brain surgery in 2011 to remove a meningioma. She’s also had kidney and brain problems in recent years.
