Things to Consider When Shopping for Plus Size Bras
Size and Fit
Plus size bras come in a wide range of sizes and styles, so it's important to take the time to find the right fit for your body. With this in mind, it's important to try on bras in different cup and band sizes to find the most comfortable and best-fitting option, according to Dora Lau, CEO of DLI, a global sourcing and design company.
“It’s important to try on various cup and band sizes to identify the most comfortable and best-fitting option,” she tells PEOPLE. “While numerical sizes provide a general guide, the fit can differ across brands, so experimenting is essential.”
Comfort and Support
When searching for the best plus size bras, Lau recommends prioritizing bras with features that enhance comfort and support.
“It’s always a good idea to seek cups that provide uplift to elevate the bust and ensure containment to minimize bounce,” she explains. “Straps placed nearer to the shoulder can prevent slipping, and a V-shaped arrangement at the back, near the hook and eye, is ideal.”
Other key features to look for in a plus size bra include a supportive wing band with a three row hook-and-eye closure for all-day wear, adds Lau. “Lined cups that aren't bulky can also offer a flattering shape, and it's beneficial to find bras that guarantee a spill-free fit while maintaining a smooth appearance at the back and sides."
Frequently Asked Questions
Can plus size bras be wireless?
According to Rosie Mangiarotti, a fashion and garment expert and founder of Perkies, there are plenty of plus size bras that are wire-free. However, she recommends paying close attention to the features of such bras, as you should opt for styles with full coverage, adjustable straps, and a supportive band. “Look for bras that offer full coverage to prevent spillage and have a wide and sturdy band under the bust for support,” she says. “Also, make sure your bra has adjustable straps that allow you to customize the fit for your comfort and needs.”
How to fit bras for plus size chests?
According to Mangiarotti, finding a well-fitting bra is a personal process that requires considering your comfort and needs as you shop. However, if you’re still unsure which bra is best for your bust, it’s always a good idea to visit a nearby lingerie store or boutique for a professional fitting. “Experienced fitters can help you find the right size and style that suits your body shape and provides the best support,” she adds.
What is considered plus size bras?
“Plus-size bras are designed for individuals with larger bust sizes, typically beyond what is considered the standard or average range,” Mangiarotti tells PEOPLE. “While the specific size range can vary among different brands and regions, plus-size bras generally start at around a US size 38C (or 40C) and go up from there.” Plus-size bras also have features that traditional bras lack, such as wider bands, stronger underwires, reinforced side panels, and wider straps, all of which offer better support. “These bras also have extra padding and support in the cups to provide shaping and lift,” adds Mangiarotti.
